Week-Long Campaign Promotes Michigan Boating Opportunities

LANSING (AP) — With the approach of summer, state agencies and an industry group are talking up the opportunities for boating offered by Michigan's abundant lakes, rivers and ponds.

The Michigan Boating Week campaign began Saturday. It's sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, the Michigan State Waterways Commission and the Michigan Boating Industries Association.

Michigan has about 1 million registered boats and 300,000 nonregistered canoes and kayaks.

It boasts almost 3,300 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and 36,350 miles of rivers and streams.

The DNR says recreational boating pumps $7.4 billion into the state economy each year and provides about 59,000 jobs.
