Wayward Deer Makes Surprise Visit To Michigan Collision Repair Shop

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A deer walks into a collision shop. It's not the beginning of joke, but exactly what happened this week in Grand Rapids.

Star Collision CARSTAR — which fixes cars after crashes involving deer — got a surprise visitor from one of the animals, Tuesday afternoon.

General manager Terry VandenToorn told The Grand Rapids Press that the 13-point buck was spotted running down the sidewalk before it went into the business, in the Creston Heights area, through a delivery door and got stuck inside.

The buck ran around inside the shop before employees were able to corral it at the bottom of a set of stairs. While they were watching it, they took photos and video of the deer.

Authorities responded, safely tranquilized the deer and took it away to be released elsewhere.

Those following the shop's Facebook page have been weighing in with anecdotes and advice.

Some, including Kevin Heintz, say they've seen this specific deer around town.

"This poor deer jumped in the river at about noon at canal park. He swam all the way up along the flood wall looking for a place to get out. He finally made it out of the river north of Leonard Street," Heintz said. "We were so relieved to see him make it out. He must of been exhausted."

Others believe the deer's odd behavior is a sign it is ill.

"Call the DNR. That deer is sick and is going to die; it probably has CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease)," commented Josh Anes. "The DNR needs to know about this buck."

VandenToorn joked that with hunters waiting in the woods for deer "they should have just come here."

He noted a sign outside the shop that reads: "Hit a deer, deer hit you. We can fix it" — which he thought was kind of funny, considering the circumstances.
