Wayne State Hosts Annual E-Waste Recycling Event TODAY

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroiters are invited to take advantage of an opportunity to get rid of old and unwanted electronic items, or e-waste, in a responsible manner for recycling.

Wayne State University is hosting its annual E-waste Day collection, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 in Parking Lot 11 -- off Cass Avenue, north of I-94.

This is a chance for the community to dispose of old computers, monitors and other associated equipment, while ensuring that they are securely and properly handled. This event is free, open to the public, and personal items are welcome.

The WSU Office of Environmental Health and Safety will have trucks on hand to collect the e-waste, along with teams of volunteers to assist in removing items from vehicles. Although items will be thoroughly shredded, organizers encourage you to delete any personal data as a precaution.

Acceptable e-waste items include:

• Central processing units (towers or laptops)
• Computer monitors
• Printers
• Keyboards and mice
• Computer speakers
• Switches and servers
• Routers and hubs
• Televisions and stereos (and similar audio devices)
• Xerographic and other copiers
• Facsimile (fax) machines
• Personal data assistants (PDAs)
• Cellular telephones and pagers
• Desk phones and other telecom equipment
• Cameras
• Wire and cables
• Household electronics not containing oil or Freon

No refrigeration units or major appliances will be accepted.
