Wayne County's Fleet Of Salt Trucks Ready To Hit The Streets
WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) -- In Wayne County, 104 salt trucks will hit the streets as soon as the snow starts this weekend.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until noon on Saturday for all of Southeast Michigan, including Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston, Washtenaw, St. Clair, Lenawee and Monroe counties.
Director Bill Bantom says that with the changing temperatures drivers could see a mix of road conditions.
"If the temps warm up quick, we probably won't have the icing effect and the rain will wash some of the snow off so it will kind of minimize the potential for the higher snow," Bantom said. "But I think we'll be OK, we've got enough residual brine down on the road and our guys will be out, so I think we'll be on top of whatever the conditions throw at us."
The National Weather Service says freezing rain could create a thin sheet of ice on top of the snow. Motorists should be prepared for slippery road conditions and limited visibility at times Friday night and early Saturday.
Bantom said he expects the trucks to be out all night until the roads are clear.
"The biggest concern for us at this time is just really conserving energy, because men and women have been working so much here lately," Bantom said. "It's just really conserving our energy and making sure that we're safe and making sure that we're making good decisions and making sure that we're able to stay out there until the conditions are better."
Bantom asks that drivers give room to the trucks when they hit the roads, and don't pass.
Here's a detailed forecast for the weekend:
