Waterford Man Charged In Deadly Drunk Driving Crash

WATERFORD TWP. (WWJ) - A 28-year-old Waterford man is facing several charges in connection with a deadly accident that investigators say was fueled by alcohol.

Police say Larry Knoop is expected to be arraigned next week on charges of second-degree murder, operating while intoxicated causing death, and two counts of operating white intoxicated causing serious injury. He remains in police custody.

The charges stem from an accident that occurred around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 on Dixie Highway and Scott Lake Road in Waterford Township.

According to police, Knoop was driving northbound on Dixie Highway when he rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at a red light. Knoop's vehicle then went into the southbound lanes of Dixie Highway where it collided with a truck driven by 47-year-old Gary Engle, of Ecorse. Knoop's vehicle then burst into flames.

Engle was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in Engle's vehicle, the driver of the other vehicle and Knoop were all taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say alcohol was a factor in the crash, but provided no further details.

The incident remains under investigation.
