Crews repairing water main breaks throughout Metro Detroit

CBS News Detroit

Several water main breaks are under repair in Metro Detroit, city officials said.

Two that were reported Tuesday morning on Detroit's east side are at the intersections of Laing and Grayton streets and of State Fair Avenue and Dequindre Road. A sheet of ice could be seen along Laing Street. Crews dug out manholes so that the street could begin to drain.

Residents are being asked to stay in their homes as it is not safe to drive over.

"We'll get it fixed pretty quickly," said Gary Brown, Director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department.

Brown says the water main break near Denby High School is a top priority, and all hands are on deck to repair the break.

Officials say there has not been a loss of water services in the area, but some residents are reporting a loss of pressure.

If residents need to report a water or sewer emergency, call 313-267-8000 or use the Improve Detroit mobile app.

CBS News Detroit is streaming a live update from city officials at 1:30 p.m. ET. Brown will be joined by Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department Deputy Director Sam Smalley, and Department of Public Works Deputy Director Sam Krassenstein.

Elsewhere in the metro area, crews from the Eastpointe Water Department were sent Tuesday morning to the scene of a water main break on Juliana Avenue, east of Virginia Avenue.

"Residents in the immediate area may experience an interruption to their water service as repairs are being made," Eastpointe officials said. "For the safety of our crew, please avoid the area. Service will be restored as soon as possible."
