Was Michigan Teacher Suspended After Offensive Top Ten List Assignment?

DETROIT (CBSDetroit) - A teacher in the Monroe County School district has been placed on administrative leave while school officials investigate a controversial assignment.

A Facebook post shows that the high school teacher assigned students homework involving a Top 10 list allegedly by David Letterman. The "Top Ten Talents of Contestants in the Miss Iraq Pageant," includes things such as blowing self up in a car in the parking lot, and withstanding the kick of a donkey.

Brian Merlos received a copy of the assignment from a friend of a student in the class and posted it on his Facebook page.

Superintendent Barry Martin wouldn't confirm the allegations -- but says they did take action:

"When we learned of this situation, the teacher was placed on administrative leave - while the situation was being investigated," said Martin. "The district, of course, considers or encourages understanding and respect of all backgrounds and cultures in the classroom and views anything that dissuades students from this path is a problem that needs to be dealt with quickly and efficiently."

As of Tuesday afternoon, there was no statement on the school district's website regarding the incident.
