Warren Police Officer Seriously Injured, Hit By Pickup Truck While Directing Traffic
WARREN (WWJ) - A Warren police officer is hospitalized with possible head injuries after he was hit by a pickup truck while directing traffic.
Dozens of police officers lined the streets at Hoover and 13 Mile Road following the accident at around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Warren Police Sgt. Matt Nichols said 29-year-old Officer Kenneth Hubert was among several uniformed cops who'd parked their marked patrol cars, with emergency lights flashing, and were on foot in the street.
"We were assisting the Macomb County Road Commission with some traffic lights that were malfunctioning, and officers were out here in the intersection directing traffic control," Nichols told WWJ Newsradio 950's Chris Renwick.
"One of the drivers apparently disregarded a signal, didn't see the officer and struck the officer who was standing within the intersection," Nichols said.
Hubert was thrown in the air and landed on the roadway, suffering serious injuries — including possible head injuries, police said. He was taken to St. John's Main hospital for treatment.
Multiple officers responded to the scene to assist; and, Nichols said, bystanders who witnessed the accident also rushed in to help Hubert — a four-year veteran of the Warren police force.
Police said the pickup driver was cooperating with investigators. A preliminary breath test was given at the scene and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
Hoover Road was shut down between 11 and 13 Mile roads but has since reopened.
