'Walk The Riverfront Wednesdays' Kicks Off May 7

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's a new plan to encourage physical fitness and healthy living along Detroit's Riverfront.

Dozens of people braved the chilly temperatures to rack up some steps through Milliken State Park to on Friday to celebrate the new partnership between Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

Blues President and CEO Dan Loepp says plans include a weekly lunchtime summer walking program, weekly yoga and Tai chi classes and a riverfront fitness park slated for 2015.

"If we can promote physical fitness and getting people in their normal daily routine to walk or run 20 or 30 minutes a day, they're healthier people," Loepp said. "That's less health care cost and it's better for them, too."

"Walk the Riverfront Wednesdays" kicks off May 7.
