Visiting Friends? Not Every Home Is Child-Proof During The Holiday

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's fun to visit family and friends during the holidays, but if you have small children there are things to consider.

Not every house you visit is going to be child-proof notes WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

Pediatrician Elaine Schulte says parents should survey a room for potential problems.

"When families are visiting friends, or family in from out-of-town in someone else's home – good idea to scan the landscape and see what looks really interesting to young children and remove it."

Children are often attracted to things that are bright and shiny, but they could pose a hazard.

Small toys, button batteries, even potpourri could be a potential choking hazard.

It's also a good idea to carefully inspect gifts given to a young child by well-meaning relatives to make sure they're age appropriate.

If you're visiting an older person's home, make sure medicines and cleaning supplies are out of a child's reach.
