Saint Statue Defaced As Vandals Hit Catholic Church Properties In Livonia

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Who vandalized St. Collette?

Livonia police are searching for suspects after two Catholic church properties were hit with spray paint and graffiti over the weekend.

The Archdiocese of Detroit released photos of the damage, inflicted sometime between late Friday evening and early Saturday morning.

"In both cases, the vandals left some rather ugly, obtuse messaging about the Church, the Vatican, and idolatry," said Ned McGrath Director of Communications for the  Archdiocese, in an advisory sent out Monday.

In red paint, someone tagged a sidewalk and statues at the St. Collette Parish and the Felician Sisters Motherhouse. Some of the graffiti messages read: "Rome Will Fall," "Pope is False prophet" and "Jesus is coming."

A marble statue of St. Collette was also hit with red paint.

Livonia police are investigating the incidents, and are urging local churches, schools and other public institutions to review their security procedures.

Anyone with information should call Livonia police.
