VIDEO: New GM "Active Safety" Center Aims To Save Lives

General Motors allowed reporters to tour its new Active Safety Research Center, at the company's Milford Proving Grounds.

As this video from WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert shows, the center focuses on new technologies that prevent crashes.

We're already seeing technologies that stop vehicles before crashes, and keep vehicles in their lanes. These are often seen as the building blocks to self driving cars.

More automation is coming, as most experts believe it will take a while to transition to the point where cars can drive themselves and everybody inside, including the driver, can just enjoy the scenery.

The new center allows GM engineers to test their own technology in a controlled setting, before they take it on the road.

The pace of that technology has now reached a point, GM says, that a dedicated area was needed, strictly for the development of active safety technology.
