CBS DETROIT - Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has been named American League Player of the Month for August, and his production certainly merited the selection.

In 31 games last month, Martinez batted .350 with a .442 on-base percentage as he racked up 41 hits and 19 walks. In that span, Martinez struck out just seven times - the same number of times pitchers intentionally walked him. He also hit six home runs and recorded 30 RBIs.

The flashy numbers reflect what Martinez has done throughout this season. His batting average of .332 ranks second-highest in the major leagues behind only Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who is hitting .340.

Martinez has also smacked 28 home runs, a career high and his most since he hit 25 homers in 2007.
