Suspect in custody after one person stabbed on University of Michigan campus
University of Michigan police are investigating after a person was stabbed Thursday evening on campus. Police arrested a suspect after an hours-long manhunt.
Officials say the stabbing happened at about 6:20 p.m. in the area of Catherine Street and Zina Pitcher Place. A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect attempted to enter the construction site of the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion.
The U of M Division of Public Safety and Security says Thomas was denied entry and allegedly stabbed a person. Police did not immediately release information on the victim's condition.
CBS News Detroit was on the scene when police took the suspect into custody sometime before 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. It is unknown how police located him.
A police spokesperson said they plan to submit charges to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.
"I looked at the location and was like 'Oh shoot, that's right outside from where I was working, where I always park," said Ruth Ann Buntin, a U of M medical school staff member.
Student Jacob Reich recalled the moment he saw what appeared to be blood.
"We didn't really think it was blood; we thought it was paint or something, but then there was text that there was stabbing, so ... we didn't know what it was. It was hard to believe to see something happen that close to where you live," Reich said.
Rick Arnold, interim executive director for the Division of Public Safety and Security, issued the following statement on Friday:
