U-Haul Plans To Rehab, Convert Vacant Detroit Kmart Into New Store, Warehouse

DETROIT (WWJ) - U-Haul is proposing to put a warehouse and truck rental building at the site of a former Kmart store in northwest Detroit.

The City Council is holding a public hearing on December 17 to hear comments on a zoning change for the property, located along Telegraph just south of 8 Mile Road.

Jeff Lockridge, a spokesman for U-Haul, said the trucking company wants to convert the former Kmart into a full-service U-Haul store with 1,200 self-storage units, a portable moving and self-storage container warehouse, truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment, moving supplies and more.

"New jobs would be added," said Lockridge. "We don't know exactly how many at this time, but it's likely in the eight to 10 range."

Kmart closed the 138,000-square-foot store two years ago.
