Two dead, two others injured, after vehicle strikes furniture building in Detroit

Brother, sister killed after vehicle strikes furniture building in Detroit

Two people are dead, and two others injured, in the aftermath of a crash into a furniture building on Detroit's east side.

The crash was reported at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday in the area of Gratiot Avenue and French Road. The Detroit Police Department said two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. One of the injured people is listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

All four in the vehicle were adults, and police believe the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.

Larry Williams, a longtime friend, identified brother and sister Joshaunda Scott and Catone Scott as the deceased.

"I've been knowing JoShaunda and Katone for over 25 years," Williams said. "They're going to be missed by everybody. They were loved by everybody, and they loved their family."

Scott Hunter's family purchased the building just a few weeks ago and says it's devastating to learn what happened. Hunter spent Wednesday afternoon with construction crews as they raced to close a large hole on the side of the building to make sure the building didn't collapse.

"I just found out they were all family, three siblings and a cousin, so two of the siblings passed," Hunter said. "That is tragic for that family."

Detroit Police Department's Fatal Squad Unit is handling the investigation. Police say the driver of the vehicle is in custody and that a report will be submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
