Trump Names Betsy DeVos For Secretary Of Education

DETROIT (CBS NEWS/CBS DETROIT) - President-elect Trump has named his pick for Education Secretary -- billionaire and former Michigan Republican Party chair Betsy DeVos.

DeVos, a leading proponent of charter schools and vouchers, has made clear her stand on Common Core State Standards stating on her website; "Certainly. I am not a supporter—period."

Republicans are cheering the choice of DeVos with Florida Governor Jeb Bush calling DeVos an outstanding pick - with an allegiance to families but the nation's largest teacher's union complains DeVos has worked to undermine public education pushing for government subsidies for children sent to private schools.

Married to billionaire Richard DeVos Jr., the son of Richard DeVos, a co-founder in Amway, she has limited experience with public education. Her children attended private schools -- and she is on the board of the Great Lakes Education Project, a pro-charter school lobbying group.

The National Education Association says 'school of choice' does nothing to help those who remain in the public school system.

David Hecker President of the American Federation of teachers in Michigan is not pleased with the recent appointment of Betsy Devos as U.S. Secretary of Education.

"Betsy DeVos and the DeVos family have spent their careers trying to undermine and undercut public education there for our children and those who educate our children," said Hecker.

Hecker says Devos is a conservative who will look out for the interests of the wealthy. He also says Devos will attack and undermine public education and turn it over to for profit companies.

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon calls DeVos a "dangerous" choice.
