Trenton Teenager Dies After Being Tasered, Shot By Police During Alleged Lawn Mower Blade Assault
TRENTON (WWJ) - Authorities say a Downriver teenager who apparently tried to attack police with a lawn mower blade has died after being shot by officers.
The situation unfolded around 4:30 p.m. Thursday at a home on Longmeadow near West Road in Trenton.
It wasn't immediately clear what led to the incident, but neighbors called police and said the teen was acting extremely agitated and might be under the influence of drugs. When officers arrived at the home, the man allegedly attacked them with a lawn mower blade.
Police say they first tried to subdue the teen with a Taser -- but that didn't work so one of the officers shot him with a department-issued handgun.
The teen -- identified as a Kyle Baker, a Trenton High School senior set to graduate soon -- was taken to Oakwood Southshore Hospital in serious condition with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He died Friday morning, according to police.
One of the officers received a severe cut to the hand during the incident and was taken to a local hospital. He has since been released.
The investigation has been handed off to Michigan State Police.
As news of Baker's death spread through the tight-knit community, many friends and classmates reached out on Twitter.
