Traffic Stop On I-94 Uncovers Semi-Truck Stolen A Year Ago

PARMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) - Authorities say a semi-truck that was reported stolen in Romulus a year ago was located when police made a routine traffic stop on I-94 in Jackson County.

Michigan State Police say a trooper stopped commercial semi-truck for a traffic violation around 5 p.m. Friday on eastbound I-94 near Concord Road in Parma Township,  located about 15 miles west of Jackson.

After stopping the vehicle, a check of the license plate showed the plate belonged on a different vehicle, according to police. The Vehicle Identification Number had also been removed from its usual location on the vehicle.

"A secondary VIN number was located on a remote area of the vehicle, and a check of this number showed the vehicle, a 2005 Freightliner valued at $35,000, was stolen approximately a year ago from Romulus," police said in a statement.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 33-year-old Detroit man, was arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and lodged at the Jackson County Jail.

An investigation by Michigan State Police and Romulus Police is ongoing.
