One person dead after truck strikes gravel hauler on I-94 near M-39

A Dearborn Heights man died after his pickup truck struck a gravel hauler on Interstate 94, the Michigan State Police reported.

The crash happened about 12:24 a.m. Friday in the westbound lanes of I-94 near M-39 (Southfield Freeway). All westbound lanes of I-94 were closed into the Friday morning rush hour as a result of the accident investigation and cleanup, according to Michigan Department of Transportation reports. The northbound M-39 ramp to I-94 also was closed.

The driver, age 64, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene of the crash told troopers that the gravel hauler had parked on the shoulder because of mechanical issues. The pickup then struck that truck.

"Currently, it is unknown why the pick up driver ended up driving on the shoulder," said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. "Once medical examiner reports and other evidence is examined, we may have a better idea as of why.
