Traffic Alert: Eastbound I-696 Shuts Down This Weekend For Construction
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) – If you were planning to use I-696 this weekend in southern Oakland County, you're going to need a detour.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says eastbound I-696 will be closed -- weather permitting -- between the I-275/I-96/M-5 interchange and US-24 (Telegraph Road) from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8 for concrete repairs. The Orchard Lake on ramps to eastbound I-696 will also be closed.
The closure was scheduled to happen last weekend but was postponed due to unexpected rain.
While eastbound I-696 is closed, drivers will be able to enter the freeway from US-24, although there will be lane closures for additional maintenance work between US-24 and Lahser Road. The ramps to and from US-24 and Lahser Road will be open.
Eastbound I-696 detour: eastbound M-5 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), then northbound US-24 to eastbound I-696. The eastbound and westbound M-5 ramps to eastbound I-696 remain closed until mid-August.
M-5 ramps detour: westbound M-5 to westbound I-96, then southbound Beck Road to eastbound I-96, then eastbound M-5 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road), and finally northbound US-24 to eastbound I-696.
