Township Leader Accused Of 'Habitual Drunkenness'

VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A township board in Genesee County is using an old law to try to get rid of an elected official for excessive use of alcohol.

Vienna Township Supervisor Randy Taylor is accused of "habitual drunkenness." The township board is asking Gov. Rick Snyder to remove him from office reports the Flint Journal.

Taylor calls it an act of "desperation." He says he was a township trustee for years but suddenly made enemies after becoming supervisor in 2012.

Taylor says he stopped drinking in April for three months but now occasionally has a beer in social situations. A 1954 law says "habitual drunkenness" can led to removal from office.

The governor's office hasn't received any information yet. Township Clerk Cindy Bryan says "there's some pretty decent evidence."
