Tow Truck Driver Fatally Shot Outside Detroit Gas Station

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a tow truck driver was shot and killed outside of a gas station on the city's west side.

The shooting happened Tuesday morning at the corner of Wyoming and Schoolcraft avenues, just north of I-96.

The victim was driving a flat-bed truck when he was flagged down by two people near the gas station, according to police. Those two people tried to rob the man, during which one opened fired.

The 23-year-old driver tried to escape but crashed his truck through a portion of a cement brick wall in the gas station parking lot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

It's unclear if the victim knew the suspects, who fled the scene after the shooting.

Description of the suspects were not immediately released.

An investigation is ongoing.
