Tour Offers Glimpse At Michigan's Aging Capitol Building

LANSING (AP) - A behind-the-scenes tour has offered a glimpse at aging mechanical and electrical systems at Michigan's Capitol building.

The media event was led Thursday by the Michigan State Capitol Commission and a contractor. In a statement, organizers of the tour said it was a chance to get a "close view of the aging systems, disintegrating infrastructure and need for upgrades."

John Truscott, vice chairman of the Michigan Capitol Commission, says that by the end of the year the commission will develop a plan and a proposed budget to address the issues. It could cost millions of dollars, depending on the scope of the plans.

Work has been ongoing to improve the 137-year-old National Historic Landmark. The dome, for example, in 2015 got an overhaul as part of a $6.4 million project.
