Tips: Avoid Potentially Deadly Mosquito And Tick Bites This Season

DETROIT (WWJ) - With warmer weather finally here for the season (hopefully), that means more time outside for most of us. With that, unfortunately, comes a greater potential for bug bites.

It's been a long time since we had to take precautions against things that bite during the day and at night, but state health officials think now's the perfect time for a reminder.

Last year, 36 people in Michigan got sick and two died from West Nile Virus, which is normally transmitted by mosquito bite.

Tick bites can put you at risk for Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Experts say your best protection against West Nile, is using insect repellent outdoors, making sure window and door screens are in good condition and eliminating standing water around your property.

For ticks, avoid tall grass and do daily tick checks when you've been outdoors.
