Tigers Take The Field For First Workout Of Spring Training

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have started their first workout for pitchers and catchers.

The Tigers took the field Friday at their spring training facility in Lakeland, hoping to bounce back from a last-place finish in 2015.

Manager Brad Ausmus says the players who were with the team last season understand that it was not a fun year -- and they certainly don't want to repeat it.

Detroit signed free agents Justin Upton and Jordan Zimmermann in the offseason, and the Tigers also traded for closer Francisco Rodriguez. Ausmus says Rodriguez's arrival at camp is being delayed by visa issues.

Detroit's big spending in the offseason reflected an urgency within the organization to return to contention. The Tigers won four straight AL Central titles from 2011-14.
