CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers are activating veteran designated hitter Victor Martinez from the 15-day disabled list, the team announced Thursday night.
Martinez should be able to play in the team's weekend series against the New York Yankees.
"I talked to Victor," manager Brad Ausmus told the Associated Press before Thursday's game was postponed due to rain. "He feels good. He feels like he's ready."
Martinez turned in a .294 batting average during a four-game rehab stint with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. The Tigers placed him on the disabled list with knee inflammation back on May 19. Martinez had offseason surgery on his knee after tearing his meniscus, but the soreness that sent him to the disabled list was not in the area of the knee on which the procedure was performed.
In 34 games before going on the disabled list, Martinez had a .216 batting average and a .308 on-base percentage.
Last season, Martinez had a banner year, finishing the season with a batting average of .335. His on-base percentage of .409 and his on-base-plus-slugging percentage of .974 were the best in the American League, and the Tigers re-signed him to a four-year deal after the season.
