Thunderstorms Could Turn Severe With Chance Of Tornadoes In SE Michigan

DETROIT (WWJ) - Friday is another day of weather watching in southeastern Michigan as severe storms are possible throughout the evening, with a chance of tornadoes.

Forecasters say a low-pressure system will move across the state early Friday evening, increasing the risk of a severe thunderstorm. The strongest storms could include wind gusts of 60 miles per hour and hail up to an inch in diameter. The storms are capable of producing intense rainfall, which could lead to flooding in low-lying areas.

The National Weather Service said there's also a slight chance of tornadoes.

CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said the storm will move quickly at a rate of about 45 MPH.

"By 9 p.m. we've got, actually, clearing skies here in Detroit but as go through the night and into Saturday, more clouds move into the Metro area," he said.

After a mostly cloudy day Saturday, the storms are expected to return on Sunday.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Friday -- Variable clouds with scattered thunderstorms; some may be severe.  High 78F. Low 57F.

Saturday -- Cloudy skies. High near 75F. Low 62F.

Sunday -- Rain showers in the morning with scattered thunderstorms arriving in the afternoon. Potential for severe thunderstorms. High 82F. Low 69F.

Monday --Variable clouds with scattered thunderstorms. High 82F. Low 63F.

Tuesday -- Partly cloudy. High 79F. Low 57F.
