Power Restored After Apartment Fire Damages Transformer

YPSILANTI (WWJ) - Authorities say power has been restored to about 3,000 homes and businesses in Ypsilanti that were knocked offline following an apartment fire.

The Tuesday morning fire apparently sparked a power surge and damaged a transformer, knocking the entire grid offline.

DTE Energy crews quickly worked on the problem and had the situation resolved in just a few hours.

The power outage forced two schools in the area to close for the day -- Erickson Elementary and the Washtenaw International Middle Academy.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
