"This Is Fresh Water And We Need To Protect It," Says Senator About Radioactive Dumping In Michigan Landfills

LANSING (WWJ) - Michigan Senator Rick Jones has announced that he will be introducing legislation that would stop companies in other states like Pennsylvania and Ohio from dumping their low-level radioactive waste materials in Michigan landfills.

Jones says the waste is scheduled to be dumped in a landfill near Belleville.

"The ethical issue here is; we need to worry about the Great Lakes watershed," said Jones. "This is extremly important to the entire country, this is fresh water and we need to protect it and certainly not by taking a radioactive product from another state."

Jones' bill would strengthen Michigan's regulations regarding the disposal of radioactive drilling wastes to be in line with other Great Lakes states.
