'This City Is Just Much Too Violent' Says Detroit Mayor After 3-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot On Easter At Home
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police have two people in custody in connection with a shooting that left a 3-year-old girl dead and two others injured in Detroit on Sunday.
"I don't know what the world's coming to that on Easter Day you kick in a door and start shooting up a house with children," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
"It's just a terrible event, and I know the police department is on top of it, but...this city is just much too violent."
Police said the gunmen burst into a home Sunday morning on Riverview Street, near Telegraph Road and McNichols, and opened fire.
They stopped to reload, police said, and then shot some more, killing the toddler — since identified as 3-year-old Anaiya Denise Montgomery — and wounding a 39-year-old man and a 26-year-old man.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner said Anaiya died of multiple gunshot wounds. Her death was ruled a homicide.
As an investigation continues, the oldest victim remained hospitalized in critical condition on Monday. The younger man was reported as stable.
Police earlier described the two 23-year-old men in custody as "persons of interest." They were searching for a third suspect: around 6 feet tall, wearing all gray clothing and driving a light-colored Mercury Grand Marquis.
Police did not immediately determine a motive or a possible connection between the shooters and victims in this case
