Thieves Targeting In-Dash GPS Units From Cars In Metro Detroit

WARREN (WWJ) - Two in-dash factory installed GPS systems were stolen out of vehicles in Warren Monday night -- but it's not something new to Warren police. Detective Sergeant Stephen Mills says it's something they've been seeing a rise in -- with nine thefts now in the past week and a half, and 15 in the month of July.

Why the uptick?

"Because of how many vehicles are coming equipped with them and then the theft of them and the cost to replace them - we saw this with airbags in the past, catalytic converters with 20 inch rims , we've seen this with vehicle parts numberous times," said Mills.

Mills says he thinks the thieves are selling them to car repair shops.

"I think it's different people. There might be a crew of people. A group of people that are working together. But it's usually at the direction of a retail outlet or car repair facility or something such as that," he said.

What's the best way to avoid being a victim of this type of theft?

"Try and park in a well lit area," advised Mills. "Make sure your vehicle is locked and secured and if you notice a survielence camera, try to park near the camera."

Last week, two men were arrested for stealing a GPS unit worth $5,000.
