The Snack Attack: Taco Bell's New Double Stacked Tacos Are Cheesy, Spicy And Sweet [TASTE TEST]

I know what you're thinking: A sweet and spicy taco? Is that even a thing? Am I dreaming?

Yes -- it is a thing, and it's really real!

Taco Bell recently introduced a completely new item, the Double Stacked Taco. It's a hard shell taco wrapped in a flour tortilla with melty cheese and sauce in-between. It comes in three creative flavors: Cool Habanero, Nacho Crunch and Spicy Sweet. And right now, you can get them for just $1 each. What a bargain!

There's a catch though -- you can't exactly get them anywhere. The tacos are currently in a testing phase and are only being sold at Taco Bells in the Toledo area. So grab your keys, it's time for a road trip!

Luckily, distance has never held me back from getting my eat on so I made a trip across the border to Toledo, aka taco town, for this special installment of The Snack Attack.

No word on when, if ever, these tacos will appear on menus nationwide.

Review: Taco Bell's Double Stacked Tacos

Cool Habanero Double Stacked Taco -- Rating: 9 out of 10
Crunchy taco filled with seasoned beef, sour cream, lettuce and cheese, wrapped in a flour tortilla with melted cheese and habanero sauce.

This is pretty much just your basic taco, but wait, what is that hiding between the shells? Why, it's deliciously spicy habanero sauce, of course! And when I say spicy, as far as Taco Bell standards are concerned, it actually is spicy. Remember T-Bell's lava sauce? Man, that stuff was good. This doesn't taste much like that sauce, but the spice is comparable. It doesn't have a roasted habanero flavor like I was expecting, but more of a fresh pepper taste. The sour cream helps keep your tongue from burning off, but there is definitely some lasting spice with this taco. Long after I was done eating it, the heat was still lingering in my mouth.

Nacho Crunch Double Stacked Taco -- Rating: 7 out of 10
Crunchy taco filled with seasoned beef, crunchy tortilla strips, lettuce and cheese, wrapped in a flour tortilla with melted cheese and nacho cheese sauce.

There's nothing too fancy with this version. We start off with a regular crunchy taco and add some red tortilla strips. Honestly, if they would have used the Flamin' Hot Fritos they put in burritos, this taco would have been WAY better, because the plain tortilla strips don't add any flavor -- just a little extra crunch. The nacho cheese between the shells makes the flavor more complex, but it's really nothing special. It kind of reminded me of the Cheesy Double Decker Taco from years ago (which also had nacho cheese between the shells) but it's not as good, because there's no refried beans. It's not that there's anything wrong with this taco, it's just boring.

Spicy Sweet  Double Stacked Taco -- Rating 4 out of 10
Crunchy taco filled with seasoned beef, sweet chili sauce, lettuce and cheese, wrapped in a flour tortilla with melted cheese and habanero sauce.

I was most excited to try this taco because of the sweet component but I have to say, I found it the worst out of all three. If you were thinking a sweet and spicy taco sounded weird, that's because it is. And it tastes just as weird as it sounds.

It's a regular crunchy taco, but with a sweet chili sauce. And it's layered with the same surprisingly spicy habanero sauce as the first taco. Don't get me wrong, the sweet chili sauce itself is DELICIOUS. It really reminds me of McDonald's sweet chili dipping sauce for their chicken nuggets -- they taste exactly the same, I swear! But mixed together with the habanero sauce, it's just not an appealing combination. The sauce is far too sweet to be on a taco.

But maybe that's just my personal preference, because when I eat at Taco Bell I'm always going for something spicy. I thank the taco gods that T-Bell brought back its ultra spicy Diablo sauce permanently because it's literally the bomb. I'm not going to lie, I always grab an extra handful of sauce packets so I can take some home. Otherwise, I'm going for the Fire sauce. So the sweetness might have just been off-putting because I prefer the heat. Still, an Asian inspired sauce just seems wrong to put on a taco for some reason. I see what Taco Bell was going for here, but I'm not sure they pulled it off.
