The Snack Attack: Banana Split Twinkies Are Back For Summer [TASTE TEST]
Just when you thought Twinkies couldn't get any better... WABAM! Hostess introduces the Banana Split Twinkie.
It's a golden Twinkie filled with banana creme, topped with a strawberry goo (Jelly? Nah, we'll stick with goo) and covered with chocolate.
Did you know: When Twinkies were introduced back in 1930, the original flavor was actually banana? The switch to plain vanilla creme came during World War II when bananas were rationed by the government. Since then, Hostess has been coming up with alternative flavor combinations to shake up their Twinkie profile, like chocolate covered cherry, blue raspberry and pumpkin spice.
Last summer, Hostess rolled out the Banana Split Twinkie as part of a promotion for the "Minions" movie and the response was apparently so good, the company brought them back for this summer. But don't wait to scoop up a box of these tasty treats -- they're only available for a limited time!
Review: Banana Split Twinkies
Appearance: As soon as I pulled it out of the wrapper, my initial thought was "Pssh, really?!" I thought the raised squares on top of the Twinkie were pockets of strawberry topping. And that made me mad because the image on the box shows the filling going across the entire cake. But crisis averted -- I cut one open and breathed a huge sigh of relief when I realized the strawberry goo does go across the entire cake, those raised squares are just the filling points.
Aroma: The only discernible scent I could pick up is what I'll call "snack cake chocolate." It doesn't smell like real cocoa, but it does smell delicious.
Taste: MMMM! So many flavors! You get the creaminess of the chocolate, sweetness of the cake, fruitiness of the banana and tartness of the strawberry all in one bite! Even though the strawberry layer is really, really thin, the flavor is sharp and stands out from the rest. Yes, the banana filling does have that slightly fake flavor, but it's not overwhelming and mixes really well with the chocolate. The cake is not the same as what comes in a regular Twinkie; It doesn't seem as dense and doesn't have that sponge cake flavor -- it tastes more like white cake. Honestly, it doesn't taste like you're eating a Twinkie at all.
Pros: The flavors work so well together, it actually tastes like a banana split -- without the ice cream of course. Plus, its covered in chocolate!
Cons: I can't really find any. Just my personal preference, I would have liked a little more of the strawberry topping.
Rating: 9 out of 10
