The Right Fit Helps Kids Put Best Foot Forward For New School Year

DETROIT (WWJ) -  There may be dozens of items on your back to school list -- if buying a pair of shoes is among them -- there are a few things to keep in mind.

WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites has some shoe shopping advice so that your child can start the school year with their best foot forward.

Children grow and that includes their feet. The Michigan Podiatric Medical Association says shoe and sock sizes may change as often as every few months.

It's important to have your child's foot measured each time they're going to get a pair of shoes.

Feet are seldom the same size so always buy for the larger foot.

Buy shoes that don't need to be broken in. Shoes should be comfortable right from the start.

Also make sure to have your child try on the shoes with the appropriate socks or tights they'll be wearing them with.

And while you may pass down a dress or sweater from one child to another it's not a good idea when it comes to shoes. Just because a shoe fits one child comfortably doesn't mean it will fit another the same way.
