Temperatures In Teens At Snowy Winter Classic
ANN ARBOR (CBS DETROIT/AP) - Fans at the Big House were bundled up as the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs began with temperatures in the low teens Wednesday as snow fell steadily over the ice at Michigan Stadium.
The game-time temperature was announced at 13 degrees, with a wind chill of zero. The wind of 10 mph was blowing into the faces of the Red Wings in the first period and figures to be a factor throughout the game.
Significant amounts of snow were shoveled off the ice during early stoppages in play.
The average temperature of the previous five Winter Classics was 39 degrees.
Wayne, Washtenaw and Monroe counties were under a Winter Weather Advisory on New Year's Day, through Thursday morning, with snow making roads very slick and reducing visibility at times. The forecast called for up to six inches of snow in some areas. [More on the weather HERE].
The game was tied 1-1, late in the second period.
