Teen Who Fled Following Police Chase Captured In Oak Park

OAK PARK (WWJ) - Oak Park police have captured a teenager who led them on a brief chase Friday morning.

Police say officers were attempting to make a traffic stop along 9 Mile Road when the driver, an 18-year-old black male, fled. Officers chased after the suspect for a short distance before his SUV crashed into an old set of traffic lights that had just been replaced at Rosewood Street.

After the crash, police say the suspect got out of the SUV and fled on foot. Tracking dogs from the nearby West Bloomfield Police Department were brought in, and they eventually found the suspect. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The teen's grandparents told WWJ's Mike Campbell that he took the vehicle from their house without permission. David Ford said his grandson must have taken the keys to his wife's SUV off the kitchen table.

"Whatever happened, it led to the house. All I know is the police was knocking on the door, asking for my wife's name, but she had everybody get out the house," he said. "They had tracking dogs is what they say, so evidently he must have hit something and just ran."

The teen could now be facing criminal charges.

No injuries were reported.
