Teen Holds 15-Year-Old Boy Hostage With Scissors Inside Dearborn Home

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Authorities say a 15-year-old Dearborn boy is uninjured after being involved in a terrifying ordeal where he was held hostage inside his own home by a man armed with scissors.

Police say they responded early Wednesday morning to a home in the 5000 block of Williamson, near Michigan Avenue and Chase Road, for what they thought was a family dispute.

When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with a man who said heard a noise inside the home, went to investigate and saw an unknown male holding his 15-year-old-year old brother hostage with a pair of scissors to the teen's neck.

"Officers observed a significant amount of blood on the suspect's hands, but were uncertain as to who was injured, so they began an immediate dialogue with the suspect," police said in a statement.

Officers were eventually able to convince the suspect, a 19-year-old man, to release the boy, who was unharmed. The officers continued to negotiate with the suspect and convinced him into surrendering peacefully. He was then taken into custody without further incident. At that time, it was determined that the suspect had a self-inflicted laceration, which was the cause of the blood on his hands. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

"The officers responded quickly and utilized their training to de-escalate a life threatening situation," Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. "The fact that this came to a peaceful resolution is a testimony to their professionalism and their commitment to protecting the public."
