Team Selected to Build New Gordie Howe International Bridge Connecting US to Canada

DETROIT (AP) — A team has been selected to build a new bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada.

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority on Thursday announced that a group called Bridging North America would construct the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The team includes U.S., Canadian and international firms with infrastructure projects experience.

A final contract is expected to be signed later this year for the cable-stayed bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit. In addition to carrying motorized vehicle traffic it's expected to have bike lanes. The Canadian-financed bridge over the Detroit River is scheduled to open in 2020.

The final cost of the project will be announced later.

The privately-owned Ambassador Bridge currently links the cities. Its owners are planning their own new span next to the existing bridge.
