Teacher Allegedly Fired After Breaking Up School Fight With Broom

DETROIT -- Pershing High School allegedly broke into mayhem last week when two students got into what looks like a knockdown, drag-out brawl.

And the teacher, who appears to be a small woman, was allegedly fired after grabbing a broom to break up the brawling teens.

So, why was the teacher axed?

Keith Johnson, President of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, told the local Fox  affiliate that the teacher was wrong for using a broom.

"Unfortunately, the method that she used, in terms of swatting one with a broom, is a violation of the corporal punishment provision under the Michigan school code," he said. "But she's caught in a quandary because under that same code she's expected to do what is necessary to diffuse a situation."
