Sweltering Heat, Thunderstorms Possible Saturday

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's going to be a scorcher Saturday, with thermometers topping 90 degrees and a chance for afternoon thunderstorms.

CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said temperatures will come very close to making history.

"The record high for today is 97, set back in 1933. So, I don't think we'll break a record but we'll be seeing 90s," said Madaus. "It will definitely be a hot, humid day."

If you plan to be outside though, keep an eye on the radar because conditions could turn stormy quick.

"There's plenty of sunshine but it's a very unstable atmosphere, so we could easily see a pop-up storm, and those storms could become severe," said Madaus.

Saturday has also been declared an Ozone Action Day. Officials say sunshine, warm temperatures and increased humidity will combine to increase ozone levels and impact air quality in the region. Citizens are urged to reduce electricity use, avoid the gas pump, put off outdoor yard work, and pass on any other activities that might release gas fumes into the air.

Here's the extended forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:

Saturday -- Partly cloudy. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. High 93F. Los around 60F.

Sunday -- Sunny skies. High 77F. Winds N at 10 to 15 mph. Low 53F.

Monday -- Intervals of clouds and sunshine. Scattered thunderstorms developing later at night. High 82F. Low 60F.

Tuesday -- Partly cloudy. High near 80F. Low 59F.

Wednesday -- Partly cloudy skies in the morning will give way to cloudy skies during the afternoon. High 83F. Low 63F.
