Suspected ID Theft Could Land 19-Year-Old In Prison For 5 Years

DEARBORN (WWJ) - It's not a case of mistaken identity, it's a case of taking an identity.

Police in Dearborn pulled over a woman on Town Center Drive for a traffic violation. She didn't have a license on her but gave her name to the officer who ran her name and issued a ticket under the name she gave, and it was later found that she used the name of a close relative in order to avoid being arrested for driving with a suspended license.

The acquaintance was able to provide the woman's true identity to police.

Now, 19-year-old Kasha Ann Simpson is being charged with identity theft, a five-year felony.

She's also being charged with operating-license suspended, revoked. Denied and operating-license-forgery/alteration/false ID.

Dearborn Chief Haddad stated, "Identity theft can occur in a variety of ways. Unfortunately in this case a close friend having intimate knowledge betrayed the victim. We will review our procedures to ensure that we are doing all we can to investigate, process and prosecute these offenses".

On February 19, Simpson was arrested and arraigned before 19th District Court before Judge Salamey, who set bond at $5,000.

A preliminary exam is scheduled for February 28.
