Suspected Gang Member In Custody After Drive-By Shooting

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A SWAT team was used to help apprehend a suspect who was holed up in a Roseville hotel following what police say was a gang-related shooting.

Police Chief James Berlin said the situation unfolded Wednesday night when the 20-year-old suspected gang member was involved in a drive-by shooting that was apparently fueled by retaliation.

"He pulled his gun and fired multiple rounds at the victim, striking his car several times," Berlin told WWJ's Laura Bonnell.

Investigators got word Thursday morning that the suspect was hiding out at the Victory Inn Hotel on Little Mack, just north of I-94, and quickly sprung into action.

"We sent our officers in and they slowly and methodically evacuated all of the surrounding rooms adjacent to the suspect's room, rooms across the parking lot from the room, anywhere that gunshots may possibly be able to reach and injure an innocent third-party," Berlin said. "Once that was accomplished, we had one of our officers contact the room via phone and were able to make phone contact. We were able to talk him into coming out of the room without any type of force having to be used."

The suspect, whose name was not released, is now facing attempted murder and firearms charges.
