Suspected Arsonist Arrested After Puppy Killed In Fire

MONROE (WWJ) - A suspect is in custody following a possible arson at an apartment in Monroe that killed a family's puppy.

Authorities say the fire broke out around 5 p.m. Friday at a duplex in the 200 block of Willow Street, in a neighborhood along Monroe Street and Elm Avenue.

Fire crews from Monroe and Frenchtown Township responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze.

The apartment that caught fire was unoccupied at the time, however, a Husky puppy in the died as a result of the fire. The adjoining apartment was also occupied by a female and her two children, who were able to exit the structure to safety without any injuries.

An investigation revealed that a suspect was seen leaving the apartment minutes before the fire. That 25-year-old man was later located and arrested by police. He now remains jailed on charges of home invasion.

Police say further charges are expected as an investigation into the matter continues.

The suspect's name was not released.
