Teenage Suspect Arrested For Noel Night Quadruple Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police have arrested a young suspect in connection with the shooting of four people outside the Detroit Institute of Arts over the weekend.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday it had received a warrant request for the juvenile suspect, who is 16 years old. Prosecutors say a charging decision will be made by Saturday morning.

Four teens were wounded by gunfire during Detroit's festive Noel Night event Saturday evening.

Speaking to at a news conference, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the shooting stemmed from a fight between two groups of teens at a high school football championship game that carried over to the crowded event in the city's museum district.

"At Noel Night these two groups met up, there was some pushing and shoving, and then there was some gunfire," Craig said.

Craig said police will consider a curfew for youth during next year's Noel Night.

"I mean, there are a number of things that we can look at going forward," Craig said. "It's a great event, great family event, just — when you talk about adult supervision — it was lacking, to be candid."

Craig said the victims received non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

The DIA was briefly on lockdown and the 45th Annual Noel Night was shut down early following the shooting. At first it was reported that three people were shot; but a fourth young victim later arrived at an area hospital.
