Summit Place, Former Thriving Mall, Now Dangerously Neglected, Some Say

WATERFORD TWP (WWJ) A thriving facility that used to attract shoppers is now a vacant shell that draws nothing but scrappers, thieves, and vagrants.

And Waterford Township officials want the owner of the Summit Place Mall property to do something to the facility that has been left to rot since its 2009 closing.

Micheal Kerblockian, the service manager for an auto repair store across the street, says the property can't be ignored.

"Somebody needs to buy it and develop it, or it does need to get torn down," Kerblockian said to WWJ's Ron Dewey. "I mean, obviously, it would be nice if somebody would do something with it and make it a nice thriving area again."

The township has deemed the site dangerous and plans to schedule hearings where police and fire officials will testify, according to the Oakland Press.

Kerblockian says a number of local businesses in that neighborhood have closed in recent months, which may had been the result of the now-abandoned mall.

The owners of Summit Place reportedly have the 74-acre site on the market for $10 million. The city says it's worth $3.9 million.
