Students To Compete For Scholarships In Poetry Competition

DETROIT (AP) - More than a dozen high school seniors from the Detroit Public Schools Community District will compete for scholarships in a poetry slam competition.

The annual event is scheduled Monday at the Detroit Institute of Arts and will be held before more than 300 other students, teachers and a panel of community leaders.

Organizers say the 15 students will present original interpretation poems on the theme "I Dream Detroit." Pistons owner Tom Gores, team Vice Chairman Arn Tellem, the Detroit Pistons Foundation and Aetna Better Health are providing $50,000 in higher education scholarships.

The competition is in partnership with The Future Project which aims to inspire students to discover their power in building a better future.
