Structural Condition Of Unfinished Detroit Jail To Be Assessed
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The structural condition of an unfinished county jail in downtown Detroit will be assessed as part of plans to complete the project.
Wayne County officials expect the assessment to be completed by late November.
An estimated $151 million has been spent for construction, acquisition and design of the 2,000 bed jail along Gratiot Avenue. Work stopped in 2013 due to the project's cost going at least $90 million over what was budgeted.
County Executive Warren Evans says the site "remains the most cost and time effective option for the jail" and that the county needs "to be able to recruit the best possible design-build contractors to complete" the project.
The jail project started under the previous county administration.
