Street Beat: Re-entry Aid To Ex-offenders

On Saturday, July 4th, Street Beat host Amyre Makupson finds out about programs that help ex-offenders stay on the right side of the law.

First, Stephanie Fakih, the founder and principal of Rights First Law, discusses some of the barriers that ex-offenders face and explains how the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act can help young offenders get back on track.

Then, Matt Costello, LESP Program Services Supervisor for the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, explains how this program helps prisoners alter their thinking and attitudes.

Next, On the Rise Bakery is a program by the Capuchins in Detroit that provides jobs and job skills to men recently released from prison.  It's explained by Brother Ray Stadmeyer and Trainee Steven Moten.

Finally, Gabriela Santiago-Romero, the Mentor Coordinator for Alternatives For Girls, and program participant Egypt Dixon, explain the Face Forward program that helps juveniles who've had a brush with the law improve their long-term employment changes.
