Street Beat: Michigan History

This week's Street Beat, hosted by April Moss, brings you the rich history of Michigan and the people who preserve that history.

First, The Michigan Historic Preservation Network's Executive Director, Nancy Finegood, and Detroit Preservation specialist, Jennifer Reinhardt, join April for a look into how they help preserve Michigan's history.

Then, for everything you need to know about Michigan and its many lighthouses, Bryan Lijewski shares his knowledge. Lijewski, an Architect with the State Historic Preservation Office and part of Michigan State Housing Development Authority, discusses the preservation of Michigan's Lighthouses and why Michigan uses them for state parks, guided tours, and more.

After talking about how the lighthouses along the coastline are preserved, Moss talks with Shawn Pomaville-Size from the MotorCities National Heritage Area about how their educational and preservation projects reach from Detroit and beyond. She also discusses the history of Michigan's automotive plants and how they formed tinkerers into titans.

To wrap up the show, Moss is joined by Sara Azu of the Motown Museum to talk about the rich musical history that Detroit cherishes. Detroit sees Motown as an iconic music brand with generations of history. Azu discusses how the Motown Museum conserves that history and how they plan to expand the museum another 50,000 square feet.
